It’s well known that we can have a psychological or emotional response to colours. But have you ever thought about how understanding your response to different colours could help to enhance your positivity?

We only have to look at how paint colours are marketed or how my website and others are branded to appreciate this. Colours are represented in our emotions and often decisions are made on those emotions. So how does colour affect your thoughts, your mood or your confidence, or levels of achievement? What feelings do colours suggest and does colour affect your behaviour? Do you feel excited, creative, warm, peaceful, feel like hibernating, studious, mysterious, dull or bright, or just plain irritated! What environment are you in when you experience the effects of colour?

On a recent sunny day, I wanted to wear bright clothes to reflect my feelings. Orange is my current love to wear colour along with green, and as soon as I put my orange jacket on this week, I felt energised and enthusiastic about the day ahead. I had a great day, met lots of lovely people at a networking event and felt a renewed vitality in growing my coaching business.

Back home I had a cathartic cleanse through my wardrobe, which is now all colour coordinated thanks to my inspirational daughter, and donated items that did not serve this sunny mindset. (Excluding of course the gardening and decorating section of my wardrobe, which seems to be quite large..) As a coach I know the importance of asking my clients to try and maintain a positive focus on their goals to encourage success. So how can you enhance this positivity through the colours you choose to wear or expose yourself to? What else is going on with your personality or your mindset that affects what you wear? Is it a representation of your culture or your social group?

Colour is a powerful tool in coaching, it can:

1. Increase confidence both in the coach and in the client

2. Encourage you to dress the part, - what image do you want to portray?

3. Develop more positivity in challenging your beliefs.

4. Foster creativity

5. Help you focus on your goals.

Consider the environment you are in, the greens of the woods and forests can represent growth, stability and calmness. Think of anticipation, hope and new beginnings associated with the blues and turquoise colours of the sea. The lovely sunshine shouts optimism, cheerfulness and warmth, while orange invites creativity, encouragement and determination.

When it comes to instilling positivity through an outward reflection of colour, what are your thoughts?. How can your inner growth be expressed on the outside through what you choose to wear? What colours bring you joy and inspiration? Do you know what colours suit you?

I would love to hear your views on this so please feel free to comment.
